Although only a single person (like most of us), Lee provides the realistic sound of a three- to five-piece jazz/pop ensemble.
This is a new concept to some, and many pianists and keyboardists try this kind of delivery without success, but Lee is successful at this because he actually can play bass guitar and drums – so he understands the musical dynamics and nuance associated with playing these instruments. Because Lee Allen has worked professionally in bands since 1969, he also understands how these instruments work with each other to create a single unified effect.
Lee pre-plays the bass parts and composes the drum parts from scratch according to his own original arrangements (for those of you into music technology, no 'loops' or stock MIDI clips are used).
For Lee, the technology is at its best when it is invisible and simply providing a great listening experience.
Lee Allen has successfully used his technique at restaurants, receptions, corporate parties and private parties -- for example, Lee performed jazz-trio music at Ray's Ristorante in Atlanta's Lenox Square for eighteen months with excellent response from the owners and customers, and August 2010 will mark the completion of Lee Allen's fifth consecutive year of regular weekly appearances at Faz Mediterranean Restaurant in Sunnyvale, California.
